The Process Of Applying For Asylum

Asylum helps eligible foreign nationals to legally stay in the United States for an indefinite period of time. You can apply for asylum whether you are in the country with or without documentation, but you must show that you are being persecuted or have a well-founded fear of persecution in your home country because of your religion, race, nationality, political opinion or membership in a special group such as LGBT.

The asylum application will include immigration form I-589, a declaration by the applicant, additional documents to prove persecution such as medical or police reports, and documents showing how the country treats persecuted individuals.

What Is Persecution?

Persecution is mistreatment by the government or the government’s inability to control others from harassing or harming certain individuals. Persecution is more than harassment or discrimination at a given time. It is typically seen as serious or long-term abuse that threatens the safety of the individual applying for asylum.
